The Doors - The End

Thanks to one and all for your support last week so here is number 4. This month it is The Doors who get the treatment of flavour of the week.
In May 1967, The Doors made their television debut by recording a version of "The End" for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) at their Yorkville Studios in Toronto. It remained unseen since its original broadcast until the release of The Doors Soundstage Performances DVD in 2002. This is the video above.
For the first track on the Popcast I managed to mix in the start of The Doors film with a mash up by DJ Zebra, who is French and he uses a Noir Desire song along with Riders on a Storm. Also look out for Jacob Golden who was a find by my Dad and a good one too.

OK now I have cut the crap out (My voice), also I have moved back to my home and this is where I will stay. I started out here a while back doing albums of a certain theme so this is almost full circle for me to return here doing albums like this again.

The name "EMF" officially stands for "Epsom Mad Funkers," but there are unofficial alternatives, such as "Every Mother's Favourite," "Eat My Foetus," "Ever Music Forever," "Eat More Fruit", "Easy Mother Fuckers", "English Mother Fuckers," and "Ecstasy Mother Fuckers" (the last of which occurred in a track called "EMF", a live version of which featured on the B Side of the single "Unbelievable").

Tim Burgess - I Believe

The standout track on the album is "Be my Baby", which is a cracking accoustic track from Burgess which picks the album up after the slow dirge, "We all need love". Another poor track is "Spend a night with you", which is a dull piece which should really have been left in the recording studio. Tracks "Years ago", "All I ever do" and "Say Yes" are good additions to the album, with the latter being an upbeat singalong.

I love the power of this, their third, album. It has some belting tracks. I think the balance of the whole album is just amazingly well done.

The band is named after a clothing shop on their Oldham estate. Their sound is based around psychedelic keyboards and jangly shaped guitars.

A demo for the track was recorded during demo sessions for Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. A bootleg of these demo sessions was leaked onto the Internet in early 2000. This track was given the unofficial title "It's A Crime" on many bootlegs as the track was unknown and unreferenced anywhere before then. The album version of the song is structurally almost exactly as the same as the demo with a slight change in melody in the part that Noel sings. The lyrics to the chorus remains intact, but the verses and bridge have totally rewritten lyrics.
The single version of the song omits the second verse and chorus.
A second, Noel-sung demo was released on the "Let There Be Love" DVD single. It has the same lyrics as the album version, and in fact the album version takes some elements from the demo such as the piano. It was probably recorded sometime in 2003 or 2004, prior to the main Don't Believe the Truth recording sessions.

Noel said of the song, "[It] reminds me of a cross between 'All the Young Dudes' and summat the Beatles might've done." Of the character "Sally" referred to in the song he commented, "I don't actually know anybody called Sally. It's just a word that fitted, y'know, might as well throw a girl's name in there. It's gotta guarantee somebody a shag off a bird called Sally hasn't it?". Noel claims that the character "Lyla", from Oasis' 2005 single is the sister of Sally. In the interview on the DVD released with the special edition of Stop the Clocks, Noel also revealed that a girl approached him and asked him if Sally was the same girl as in Stone Roses' track "Sally Cinnamon". Noel replied that he'd never thought of that, but thought it was good anyway.
Noel admits that certain lines from the song are lifted from John Lennon: "I got this tape in the United States that had apparently been burgled from the Dakota Hotel and someone had found these cassettes. Lennon was starting to record his memoirs on tape. He's going on about 'trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head.' I thought 'Thank you, I'll take that'!" "Revolution from me bed" most likely refers to Lennon's infamous bed-ins in 1969, both in the quote and in the song. The piano during the intro of the song highly resembles Lennon's "Imagine". Like many other popular songs, the chord progression for both the verse and the chorus are based on the classical piece Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. The songs only differ slightly at the end of each phrase. Gallagher also admits that he was under the influence of substances when he wrote the song, and to this day he claims he does not know what it means.
The song has become a favourite at Oasis' live performances. Noel encourages the crowd to sing along and often keeps quiet during the chorus, allowing the fans instead to sing along while he focuses on his guitar playing. The volume of crowd noise that usually descends on the chorus at concerts is easily audible on the rendition of "Don't Look Back in Anger" on Familiar to Millions.
In a 2006 radio interview, Liam Gallagher said that it was he who came up with the line "so Sally can wait" as Noel was struggling with that particular line at the time. (Bootlegs of demos of the song feature Noel singing 'Crowley' — as in Aleister Crowley — rather than 'Sally' so there may be some truth in Liam's claim.) Noel confirms this on the bonus DVD, entitled Lock the Box, released with the Stop the Clocks retrospective album. In the interview with Colin Murray, Noel admits, "I was doing it in the sound check and the so Sally bit, I wasn't singing that...and he [Liam] says, 'Are you singing so Sally can wait?' and I said, 'No.' and he said, 'Well you should do.'"

The song, according to Noel, is about losing someone close and it was written when his mother, Peggy, was hospitalised and suspected of having cancer. His mother did not have cancer, but the experience gave Noel the idea to write something "quite bleak." It has also been claimed that rhythm guitarist Bonehead requested Noel write a song along those lines after the death of his own mother. The line "Cold and Frosty Morning" appears to have been lifted from the Kinks' "Dead End Street".
Liam Gallagher claims to have cried whilst recording the song, as a result of dwelling on "a certain thing". He said, in a 1997 interview, "I just thought 'fuck that, I can't be singing this song' and I had to go away and sort meself out". Listening back to the song he admits to being very proud of his vocal performance.

"Whatever" was released as a contender for the coveted position of Christmas #1, 1994. It is a testament to Noel Gallagher's all-conquering self confidence that he should predict "Whatever"'s success before he was even given a record contract, saying "In the beginning, there was a masterplan, to the extent that I knew that 'Whatever,' one of the first songs I ever wrote, would be a Christmas Top Five hit, but I think anyone who heard the song could have told you that."

Blur - Parklife CD2

Wikipedia say:
"Parklife" is a song by Blur. It is the title track of their 1994 album Parklife. When released as the album's third single, "Parklife" reached #10 in the UK singles chart. The song has spoken verses, narrated by actor Phil Daniels, who also appears in the song's music video.
A number of newspaper articles about the young middle classes' adoption of Estuary English - a phenomenon of which Blur's frontman Damon Albarn was a prominent example - appeared during the single's chart run, including one in The Sunday Times on the day the song entered the singles chart (although Daniels's accent is closer to Cockney).
The song played a part in Blur's supposed feud with fellow Britpop band Oasis when, at the 1996 BRIT Awards, the Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, taunted Blur by singing a drunken rendition of "Parklife" (with Liam changing the lyrics to "Shite-life"). The members of Oasis were collecting the "Best British Album" award, which both bands had been nominated for.
The song's video features Daniels as a smarmy double glazing salesman, with Albarn as his assistant and the other band members appearing as various characters from the song. At one point, Albarn is impressed to see a man carrying a placard reading "Modern Life Is Rubbish", the title of Blur's previous album; on the reverse is written "End of a Century", the title of their subsequent single from Parklife.
The song is still very popular today, with occasional radio plays and regular appearances on music television, in shows such as "The Best of... 1994" on The Vault.
In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Parklife" at number 41 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

Blur - Girls and Boys

"Girls & Boys" (or "Girls and Boys") is a song by British rock band Blur and is the lead track on their third album, Parklife. It was released 7 March 1994 as the first single from that album, charting at #5 in the UK Singles Charts (see 1994 in British music). The single was the band's first Top 5 hit.
Lead vocalist Damon Albarn's withering putdowns of trendy pansexuality and aimless hedonism satirise the party culture in the UK, where groups of youths go on holiday to places like Faliraki and Kavos with the sole intention of getting drunk in the local night-clubs. Ironically, it was a huge hit among them, as the electro-pop noise imitated by Graham Coxon gave it regular play among the clubs.
The single release also includes a remix of the track by Pet Shop Boys, who later covered the track live on tour in 1994.

Starsailor - Fever

Starsailor's first single. I think that this band are fantastic and this is a great start to thier career. Check the second album out.

'Fever', the band's first single, was released in early 2001. The song, and its two B-Sides 'Love Is Here' and 'Coming Down' were cut from a demo recording session in the Summer of 2000. All three tracks went on to feature on Starsailor's first album 'Love Is Here', but the latter two were re-recorded.

Supergrass - Caught By The Fuzz

"Caught By The Fuzz" was the debut single (not including the two limited edition Backbeat Records releases) of Britpop band Supergrass. It was written around the true-life incident of leadsinger Gaz Coombes being arrested for being caught smoking cannabis in his youth. The single reached #43 in the UK Singles Chart and was only on the chart for two weeks.
It was used as the closing theme tune of the 2007 movie, Hot Fuzz, and features on the official soundtrack.

This is by far one of my favourate albums ever. Just listen to it and judge for yourself.

The Britpop quartet Kula Shaker appears to have raided the closets of its favourite bands in the making of its debut album. K contains a bluesy, retro ambience very much like The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. The full-throttled guitars sound like those of Oasis. And a hefty dose of Hindu mysticismruns rampant throughout--a la Cornershop.But Kula Shaker manages to make something original of all those borrowed parts. Rising above its influences, Kula Shaker creates a niche of Britpop in which transcendence is the goal. Amidst theblues-drenched guitars and the Hindi chanting, the band is hard at work building something spiritual and sensual. I think I first heard of him not too long ago, three years ago on BBC Radio Two. I have bought so many of his albums since then and I just love the style of the sound and production.

For their second album, 1997s Mother Nature Calls, the fast paced guitar songs were replaced with a a more contemplative sound. The band continued to release radio-friendly material such as "Free Me". According to Power the title of the album was supposed to be tongue in cheek because Mother Nature is always calling (because of man's mortality), but also because he was on the toilet at the time he came up with the name. The band decided to once again use John Leckie to help record the album and the production was much more well-developed on this album, with the band using much more than the simple guitar-bass-drums mix as they had done on the previous album. John Power has blamed the initial poor reception on the album on the fact that it is a "grower" requiring much more patience than the more pop-based style of All Change and has claimed that a number of critics later told him that they felt they had changed their perceptions of the album. Despite this the album spawned another two top ten hits with "Live the Dream" and "Guiding Star" and one top twenty hit with "I'm So Lonely". The album peaked at #3, going platinum (according to the BPI), but many believe the album went at least double platinum, if not more, considering its chart peak.

"All Around the World", nearly ten minutes long, is embellished with string and horn pieces, and is followed by a two-minute-long instrumental, "All Around the World (Reprise)". Upon its release the reviews were generally positive. It is in keeping with many Oasis songs, such as "Whatever", "Acquiesce", "Live Forever" and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" in that it preaches the belief that "it's gonna be OK". It also features a backing vocal in the coda remarkably similar to the corresponding section in The Beatles' classic "Hey Jude".

Noel has said that the lyrics of "The Importance of Being Idle" are inspired by his own laziness. Some of the second verse, with the reference to begging his doctor for "one more line", seems to be referring to an actual event as this resembles Noel's account of how he gave up cocaine in 1998.
Most reviewers acclaimed the track as one of the highlights of Don't Believe the Truth, which itself was widely praised as a marked return to form. The band mentioned in interviews in June that it would become the second single, after the UK Number One "Lyla". The b-sides are Liam Gallagher's "Pass Me Down the Wine" and Gem Archer's "The Quiet Ones."

Ride - Firing Blanks

The box set is a must have for anyone in there collection I would recomend buying this as the whole package is great.

Here is what Steve from the band thought of the album.

Something's Burning - During the summer of 1993 we recorded two sessions at Courtyard Studios in Oxford as preparation for "Carnival Of Light". Sadly this song, whilst good enough to have been included was dropped along with various other potential tunes. Just too many songs knocking around at that time.

Chelsea Girl (4 track demo) - This is Andy and Me demoing tunes during 1988 in my bedroom. I had a four track machine which we used for all sorts of ideas in the early days before we had a proper band. In later months we managed to demo a lot of early songs squeezing the whole band into bedrooms or living rooms much to the neighbours disgust.

Blue & Everybody Knows - Written by Loz, these were originally included in the tracklisting for Going Blank Again. Unfortunately they were dropped along with 'Tongue Tied' on the advice of both record companies who were insisting that the album was way too long. I think they had a point.

Dreams Burn Down dub - Again we made Creation very nervous when we played them this saying that we had re-thought the whole concept of the song. Although it would be difficult to top the real version, I think this is a fantastic alternative offering an even darker atmosphere.

She's So Fine - It took three years for this song to finally make it on to Tarantula. This is the original version recorded back in 1993, another song left by the wayside in preparation for Going Blank Again. We demoed it again in Cornwall with John Leckie, this time looping a 4 bar sample which never made it to the vocal stage.

New Age - The only cover on the CD. Recorded at Abbey Road as a potential b-side for 'How Does It Feel To Feel' but later superseded by some instrumental nonsense from me and Loz in the shape of 'Walkabout'. God knows why!

Tongue Tied - This in my opinion is the best unreleased track that we ever recorded. I think this is one of the few occasions where the intensity and beauty of Ride was captured perfectly on tape, everything fits together perfectly. Unfortunately it was dropped as a way of reducing the length of Going Blank Again. Why it never turned up on a b-side I don't know. Dropped and forgotten.

I'm Fine Thanks - Another song from the early days. It was originally titled 'Why' and demoed several times on the four track before we took it into our first proper recording session at Union St. Studios in Oxford where we recorded Drive Blind. An early live favourite.

Xmas Song - Absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. A sign of cabin fever setting in during the Going blank again sessions.

King Bullshit - Yet another piece of music that could have been included on Going Blank Again. The full version is over 8 minutes long and was edited down to about 60 seconds to bridge a couple of songs on the album instead. This version uses all the best bits without having to endure the full horror of Me and Loz going on and on and on...

Smile (4-track version) - We had to work hard to clean this version up as every other demo fell short of the danger that appears here. Again another song that worked really well live but never sounded right in the studio, hence this hissy mess that captures Andy's speakers giving up half way through the outro.

Welcome To Paradise - Recorded and mixed for Tarantula but cut from the final tracklisting.
In A Different Place (differently) - This is included as it has something that the Nowhere version failed to capture. Andy's lead guitar is way over the top and the rest of us are playing all sorts of bum notes but for some reason it remains the best take we ever did.

BarneyS - This is what happens when you're trying to record an album but your singer is still in bed at 3 in the afternoon. It's a tribute (or blatant rip off) to New order that gradually built throughout the day looping Loz's fills and Andy's riffs onto my backing track. However as soon as Mark arrived with axe in hand, normal Ride business was resumed.

The debut album from these young major label signings offers keyboard-driven power pop that delves back in time to incorporate vibes from the Beatles and Small Faces. When it works it's great, especially on "Weird Superman" which swaggers along with a great hook. "United States Of Amnesia" soars high with clever lyrical play, while "We Don't Belong" closes the record with incredible energy. Straw offer refreshingly coy yet largely unpretentious songs that come over particularly well after they've been seen live, yet the quartet sometimes try to be doing too much at times. The sickeningly jaunty "Aeroplane Song" is something you'd expect from latterday Space and there's too much similar gimmickry elsewhere.

I love shout it out loud, this is a great tune that just shows what great B-Side they could still make.

Noel Gallagher had high expectations for the song, saying "I hope it does for us what 'Don't Look Back In Anger' did... It appears Gallagher's hopes were well founded, as the song received a warm response from the critics. NME said, with regards to the album " 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' [is where] you really start rolling out the red carpet. A return to the long lost humanism of 'Don't Look Back In Anger', it's a reminder of Noel's uncanny knack of cheering up his audience just when they need it most." Q magazine held up the song as proof that "genius never completely left Oasis".

Thirteen, is more grungy than Bandwagonesque in style; it suffered scathing reviews at the time of release, possibly motivated by a backlash against the critical praise heaped on Bandwagonesque and also instigated in part by the group who with typical honesty (and probably fatigued by the protracted recording process) did not hide their disappointment with the album from interviewers. Brendan O'Hare left Teenage Fanclub during this period due to "musical differences" and was replaced by Paul Quinn (formerly of the Soup Dragons).

"Shakermaker" is a song by British rock group Oasis, written by their lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. First appearing as a single, released on the 13th June 1994, which peaked at number 11 in the UK charts, it was later released on Oasis' groundbreaking debut album Definitely Maybe. It was also the first song performed by the band on the UK's world famous music program, Top Of The Pops.
The song, much like its predecessor - "Supersonic" - is a fine example of how Noel Gallagher is able to couple nonsensical lyrics with a catchy tune and create a popular song, in the vein of John Lennon of The Beatles. Noel admits the lyrics are taken from the world around him, for example, a Shaker maker was a popular toy in the 1970s, the character of "Mr Soft" was taken from a Trebour Soft Mints commercial, which featured Cockney Rebel's song "Mr Soft", "Mr. Clean" is a song by The Jam, one of Noel's favourite bands, "Mr Benn" is a British children's cartoon and the entire last verse - Mr Sifter sold me songs/When I was just 16/Now he stops at traffic lights/But only when they're green - was written in a taxi on the way to the recording studio to record the song. Apparently, Liam Gallagher was pestering Noel to finish the song. At this point, the taxi stopped at the traffic lights outside 'Sifter's"' (a record shop in Burnage, Manchester). Noel penned the lyric and it became part of the song. Noel used to frequent the store to buy old records before Oasis started releasing albums and Mr Sifter refers to the owner of the record store. Sifter told Noel to mind his words if he ever got famous.[citation needed]
The song illustrates Noel Gallagher's habit of borrowing from the past, as the tune for the verse was originally taken from "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" (the song made famous from its use on Coca Cola adverts in the 1970s) by Roger Cook, Roger Greenway, Bill Backer and Billy Davis. However, this led to Oasis being successfully sued for the unlicensed use by The New Seekers and they had to pay out $A500,000 (Australian dollars). When asked about the incident, Noel Gallagher said, "We drink Pepsi now." Noel has also offered conflicting reports that he actually stole the song's melody from the Beatles' song "Flying" which is also quite possible.

This record is filled to the brim with good hearty power-pop goodness. You can purchase this safe in the knowledge that there are no duffers here - it's just solid tracks all around. The opening track "Hold me up" is a killer pop song and has remained rooted in my memory since I heard it way back in 1994. The stand outs for me are the Gene Clark cover ("Why not your baby"), "My blank pages", "Atmosphere" (thankfully not a Russ Abbott cover), "Time wraps around you" (great guitar bridge) and "Faster days". I should add that "This life is killing me" had me pluging in my air guitar and setting the CD on repeat - much to my wife's displeasure! Power-popsters everywhere need to own this record.
